Plain as day
I was faced with the problem of my Windows laptop not connecting to a relative's WiFi. He had given me the password to my Android phone through QR code, and that worked. But when I typed in the password he gave me into my Windows laptop, the router refused to allow it.
Andorid normally hides WiFi passwords with texts that reads "(unchanged)". I wondered if I could get the password from the QR code, translating the array of small squares into English. I could. Here's how.
This method uses a second Android phone:
- On the Android phone that successfully connected to the WiFi, display the QR code of the password. I have found that different variants of Android put the code in different places. Here is one location: Settings > Network & Internet > WiFi > tap the gear icon, and then the QR code is displayed. On another Android, I found I needed to scroll down the list of WiFi networks and tap on an item labelled QR Code.
- With a second Android, open an app that reads QR codes. This is a stand-alone app that you download from Google's Play store.
- The app prompts you to point the phone camera at the QR code.
- After a moment, the app displays the human-readable version of the WiFi router's SSID, password, and security type.
