Actually, you can use analog headphones with an usb c connector, and use the phone's built in DAC.

But it depends on the phone, if it supports this mode, and of course you have to use a special headphone or a cheap passive converter to use this mode.

I converted to USB C with my last Windows Phone, which had a USB C dock option.

Using it with the dock, to HDMI or a wireless display adaptor, made a very portable mobile solution. Was trialing it for cycle trips were you really don't want to take a notebook, even a small one.

Then had to go back to USB mini with the Samsung Android one, a step backwards as they are so 'fragile'. At least the dock etc is still fully compatible with other USB C gear like my Surface Book 2 & Go.
