Pebble Steel, original edition
So I've been wearing the Pebble Steel watch since Christmas, when I bought it for myself as my present. Well, the kids helped pay for it. So, what's it been like?
The more important question is: Has it replaced my previous watch of 13 years? -- a Citizen Ecodrive whose battery never needs replacing. Yes, even though I charge this new one twice a week.
One aspect of getting a new smart device, whether the original Palm Pilot or a Pebble is settling on the apps that make life better and the device more useful.
For a watch, the selection is much more limiting than a Pilot or Android phone, of course. After testing dozens, I've settled on these few:
- Weather watch face that shows date, time, and battery level
- Dual time zones
- Count down timer (long press top button)
- Timer (long press bottom button)
I do wish that we could edit the user interface. I'd remove the Music playback function and the three default watch faces.
Meanwhile, the company is up to $18,743,918 on Kickstarter for its new Pebble Time series. Word is that the original series (like mine) gets upgraded to the time-based functions this summer.
