Norman Roith sounds as much of a dinosaur as AutoCAD. Engineers need to design in 1D? Is he kidding? Engineers haven't "needed" 2D for over 20 years. They may have been forced to deal with simplified 2D "pictures" for some of the reasons mentioned. For obvious reasons, he mentions none of the expensive errors caused by working in 2D, or any of the vastly larger number of situations where 3D is far more productive than working in 2D. Norman probably expects companies to make parts the old fashioned way as well - carving prototypes out of wood or clay by hand. I'd like to see him revise a design just in one place, without having to find every view affected and making those changes manually over and over. Lets see him perform a FEA analysis or make a prototype by CNC or 3D printer using his beloved 1D ( or even 2D ) design....

I believe that 2D is just about outlived its usefulness. I am a dinosaur myself. Many years ago I worked in a tool and die shop hand working complex 3D electrodes into exact tolerance with a margin of + or - .001 inch. Then these electrodes were used to burn dies for aircraft parts usually. Of course all the other work associated with finishing dies commences. Cleaning EDM ( electronically deposited material) had to be removed from the dies by the use of stones of varying degree like sandpaper. I could spend a week working in an area 2 square inches.

I am amazed at the advances. I think all manufacturing should try and utilize all that they can. 3D printing I have yet to witness personally but my son who is an adult laughs and states that I truly am ancient as far as technology is concerned. I just hope all this technology does not come at the cost of millions of more jobs lost.
