Live blog: Solid Edge University 2013 Day 1

Alright, here we are at Solid Edge University 2013 in Cincinnati Ohio. Well, actually not. Turns out we are in the convention center in Northern Kentucky, but we can see downtown Cincinnati across the Ohio River, which belongs the Kentucky (the river, I mean, not the city), as the driver proudly told me: "The border between the two states runs along the Ohio side of the river." Indeed, I don't think I will be visiting Ohio at all, as the Cincinnati airport also is in northern Kentucky.

With the location established, let me report on the keynote sessions. Solid Edge ST6 is the new release due out shortly, and so we are hearing bits and pieces during keynotes from Chuck Grindstaff (ceo of Siemens PLM Software) and Karsten Nebury (vp of Solid Edge). A full session introducing ST6 comes later this morning with Dan Staples (director of Solid Edge development).

What we have heard so far includes:

* Newly added ST surfacing, targets industrial design

*New link to KeyShot rendering

*New ability to run YouTube videos inside Solid Edge for training

*Definitely no cloud version of Solid Edge; Unlike some other CAD vendors, who seem to think that the cloud solves all engineers' problems. Siemens PLM says its users are instead interested in using the cloud for collaboration, and so the company is enabling this.
