Today was the first day the world's newest Android tablet went on sale in Canada, and Staples was offering 10% off all tablets. After buying the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 ($450 with 32GB), I returned it. After one hour, I found four flaws that were fatal to me:
- The Note series of tablets feature a pen. I found it looked and felt cheap.
- The pen did not work very well with the tablet. The tablet seemed to miss recognizing it sometimes; the plastic tip of the pen moves in and out by just enough to make me unsure if it contacted the screen or not. Seeing's how the pen is a prime selling feature for the Note series, I was stunned that it looked poor and operated poorly.
- No HDMI port. We use my older Android tablet for viewing movies on our big screen via HDMI, but this Samsung Note tablet has a 50-pin proprietary connector -- with no HDMI adapter included.
- It did not recognize my Bluetooth keyboard.
On the plus side, the 1,.5GHz quad-core CPU and fast RAM had everything running really fast and smooth; I have never seen software update download and intall so fast. It rated 5500 on the benchmark, about 5x faster than my Google Nexus S.
I also liked the widely-spaced stereo, front-facing speakers.
Nevertheless, I did a total reset to wipe all my information, and then brougth it back to Staples.
