"There are approximately 14 million total CAD seats and over 5 million 3D CAD seats currently worldwide and the number continues to grow. However, despite this large addressable market, only about 50,000 3D printers have been installed through the end of 2011, suggesting a significant opportunity for us." (Source)

Isn't this just a 3D printed version of the "1% of China" argument loathed by VC's?

3D printer sales are so small that the ceo of a public company has to point financial analysts to the huge potential. Some of the analysts will be smart enough to know that the "millions of potential users" argument is bogus. This ceo makes this "millions of CAD users" statement twice during the conference call.

It is a ratio of 1 printer to 100 engineers designing with 3D
Each printer works 24/7 = 168h'. The engineer only 40h'
so the ratio it is a 1 to 23
50% of the design can't or don't need 3D print.
Down to 1 to 11.5
1 hour printing can be equal to 10 hour engineering
If my numbers make any sense, the 3D printing industry must shift quickly to the non professional market.
