Wasn't Caltran a free Bentley user in the first place? I use to work at Intergraph and I thought DuPont and Caltran were given unrestricted licenses for being Bentley's first customers. Kind of they help Bentley, Bentley helps them. If so then Caltran probably thought why pay when you can get it for no or low cost. Bentley use to tout Caltrans 4,000 users or something crazy like that.
In any way it's a big loss for Bentley and a win for Autodesk and I assume 3D Civil.
Personally I'm happy. I worked for a developer for bentley in the mid 90s and was a tough company to work with. Compared to Autodesk which will bend over backward to help you. What goes around comes around.
Personally AutoCAD 2012 is awesome these days, light years ahead of MicroStation ss2 which still looks like a DOS program. (been an autocad user since 2.14b and microstation user since ustation vms, used Unigraphics, SDRC, IronCAD, SolidEdge, SmartSketch, SketchUp, Inventor and others too over the years).
Congratulations Autodesk! Although good to see Carlson in the mix as well.
