At a press conference this morning, Google described its plans to hook up mobile phones to cloud computing. (I'm skimming the live blogging provided by Danny Sullivan at Search Engine Land, who is covering the talk by Mike Nelson of Google pr.)
Put a 4G phone and connect with a cloud computing structure, and suddenly the [phone's own] MIPS kind of don't matter... We've got, he argues, “mini super computers in our pocket.”
Some examples have already been implemented:
- Google Goggles visual search engine figures out the content of photos taken by cell phones.
- GPS and turn-by-turn instructions piped to the cell phone.
- Voice recognition of search queries (I've used this on my iTouch).
There were new Android voice capabilities announced at the news conference, but none of interest to me.
Our interest is the application to CAD. Getting cloud apps to perform FEA to the cell phone is not the issue; displaying the result is the problem.
Well, maybe someone will figure that out.
