One problem they commonly encounter is that Word will not print their documents. In the university environment, students have the situation where they are printing essays and papers at the last moment before deadline. Using software that screws up is unpleasant.
(Which is why I remind them to use the Atlantis word processor whenever possible; it is fast and stable.)
This week again, I needed to bail out a daughter whose copy of Word balked at printing a 6-page report 30 minutes before it was due. Here's what we did:
1. The daughter emailed me the DOCX file.
2. I opened it in my copy of Word, and then generated a PDF file.
3. I emailed her the PDF file, which she then printed.
Daddy saves the day, again.
