The upgrade actually hasn't been a nightmare, it's more like a multi-step puzzle, or like the arcade game Whack-a-Mole. Just when you think you've whacked all your problems, a couple more pop up.
Thanks for your prayers, Rande. We should also pray that Microsoft will finally (after 35 years) develop a Copy command that will indeed copy files, and a file system that will secure files instead of extinguishing all of them in the blink of an eye.

VMWare offers many products. The one that seems best is VMWare Workstation. It's $189, which is kind of expensive -- about 1/3 the cost of buying a new laptop. I'll try the 30-day trial, if Sun Virtual Box doesn't do the job.
If I can't get the scanners to work with the new Win7 on HP, I think I can keep the old XP T43 hobbling along for a couple more years with a new usb fan and some duct tape (about $15 in total).
