Earlier I posted a solution to a bug in Windows 7 that causes the computer to lose contact with external drives, whether hard drives or USB keys. The bug in 7 causes Windows to power down the USB hubs, causing the contents of drives to disappear, and then the drives themselves to become invisible.
The solution is to turn off the option that powers down the hubs. (Get into the Device Manager, and then in the Properties for every USB Root Hub, turn off the Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save power option.)
The problem is that 7 randomly turns this option back on. This seems to occur after each reboot, as best as I can tell.
