He had the same problem on his tx2000, which has the same design flaw as the tx1000 -- something goes wrong and the computer no longer boots. However, he spent more time researching for a solution than I did, and he came across this one:
1. Press the palm of your hand hard on the J-K-L keys on the keyboard.
2. While pressing down, turn on the power.
And, oh my goodness, it worked for me. Well, not right away. Since I thought this computer was a goner, I had pulled the 200GB hard drive and stuck it into an external drive enclosure that cost me $30. (I had also pulled one of the 2GB RAM modules, putting it into my son's notebook computer.)
So, to actually boot the computer, I quickly plugged in a USB key that had Linux Mint 8 on it.
Why does the JKL-plam trick work? No one knows for sure, but it is thought that the force pushes a component on the motherboard, enabling the computer to start properly. I am glad I didn't pay HP $446 for the second repair.
Now if only HP would get social, and read up on how to fix its own computers.
