I came across an anonymous posting from a CAD-savy employee of a company that claims to have three times ($17b) the market value of Autodesk and deploys software to 20,000 computers. It complains about Autodesk's method of installing software: Dear Autodesk: Please Consult your Enterprise Customers.
Rather than just complain into the void, this guy lists specific points of weaknesses, such as:
- Standardize your updates! Please just pick ONE format. .MSP would be nice. Right now you have .ZIP, .EXE, .MSP, .MSI, as well as individual files. This is patently absurd and stupid.
Me, I don't have a problem with Autodesk's install. But I don't deploy to more than one desktop and/or one netbook. But I can feel this guy's pain when I have to do security updates on my computers, my family's computers, my in-law's computers... and that's just 8.
I wonder if the reason is that Autodesk is a scattered company, with semi-independent divisions operating in Oregon, Michigan, Massachusetts, Quebec, and so on.
Blogger Skatterbrainz doesn't just hit Autodesk with a stick, he also beats the company with a carrot:
So far, we've been ignored [by Autodesk]. Other vendors like Siemens and Dassault waste no opportunity to pounce on this in front of our board members.
Well, I could see that if it was the other way around, Autodesk would be very attentive to capturing a Siemens or Dassault shop.
