Yesterday, Autodesk's external pr firm offered me a no-cost version of Sketchbook Mobile for the iPhone cell phone:
We'd like to offer you the opportunity to download the app for free to try it for yourself ...and upload your own work on the Flickr Gallery.Oops. Autodesk is now faced with marketing a piece of software running on hardware used by 0.00097% (est.) of all CAD users. I had no choice but to reply:
What, on my Nokia cell phone? [My kids all have Sony-Ericssons, 'cause they're cool.]Autodesk also had no choice. Alias runs on Mac OS X (and Windows); iPhone runs a version of Mac OS X. Logically, it made sense to (first) port the sketching app to the Apple cell phone, seeings how Windows Mobile 6.5 is No-where's-ville, and porting to Android is just too much like hard work.
Writing OS-independent code is now making more sense all the time.
with all due respect Ralph, you're not the target market for SketchBook Mobile... ;)

this isn't really a CAD tool, as far as I can tell. It's a really intricate draw application. It's a niche, and an artsy one at that. I would call this a 2D cousin of 3DStudio Max, not a smartphone version of AutoCAD.

of course this will get a lot more interesting when the iPhone/iPod Touch has something with a 7-9" screen
