Press releases predict the future and then become part of history. Eventually the future foretold by the press release arrives, only to turn around and smack the text and its promises. Harry McCracken of the Technologizer hauls out a few not-so-old press releases for us to chuckle over.
In particular, there is Microsoft's embarrassing "Microsoft launches Windows Vista and Office 2007" press release from Jan'07 -- less than two years ago. Mr McCracken analysis it in The Press Releases of the Damned!
Those of us who make a living from reading between the lines of press releases every day knew right away that the use of shallow "The Wow Starts Now!" coverup was Microsoftian facade for deep problems. A technology company is not shy in boasting about its technology; shyness is a sign of trouble.
In a second posting, Mr McCracken lists Vista's problems: Sixteen Reasons the Windows Vista Era Never Quite Happened. And now the latest surveys show that businesses and consumers will return the favor to Microsoft by being shy about buying Windows 7; that Microsoft is offering long-term free versions and Walmart pricing on 7 indicates it fears this new problem.
It's good to see the convicted monopolist being smacked back by the marketplace it abused for two decades.
