LandSketch for Highways from Eagle Point Software lets people (like I used to be) do preliminary highway design by combining data from several sources and then putting in the initial design elements with multiple scenarios. Course, we didn't have computers back then, just our trusty HP41CV programmable calculators, ink pens, mylar, and a steady hand.
With support for Google Earth, LandXML, and Shape files, LandSketch for Highways allows designers to begin their preliminary designs by leveraging [ugh, I dislike that word] numerous forms of electronic data. Once these existing features are established, highway segments including basic horizontal, vertical, and cross-sectional elements are simply sketched on the basemap complete with catchlines and proposed right-of-way.
Once the initial studies are done, the data are imported into design software like Civil 3D.
