Rumors are abounding of Apple introducing hardware/OS that'll sense the motions of up to four fingers on a single touchscreen. Four times the fingers, four times the finger grease.

I think that you've gotten a couple of things garbled here. First:

So, "some" Macs and "some" builds of OS X are *already* working with four-fingered gestures. Now:

i) upcoming builds of OS X which span the product range will undoubtedly extend this feature to those Macs whose hardware can do it

ii) there is a credible rumour that Apple is building something resembling a larger iPod Touch. Is this actually a tablet, or is it just a seperate trackpad for desktop Macs? Time will tell.
