GPS and cell-phone triangulation are fine for locating us in 2D, but much better is the idea of students at the Engineering College of Aarhus, Denmark.
Engineering students put 3D plans of buildings on an iPaq, and then used a 3D sensor to display their position. An immediate application is for firefighters to figure out where they are, and determine exit routes.
This is the sort of application that makes me so excited about the iPhone API.
