After solving the RTS problem on the Toshiba, I faced another hurdle. After booting the computer with Windows 2000, I clicked an item in Explorer. The computer kind of locked up: nothing much worked. This occurred time and again, displaying a dialog box complaining:
Validation failed for VSINIT.DLL. Missing root certificate.
It took longer to find a solution to this problem. It turns out to be a problem with Zone Alarm not finding a security certificate it needs.
The solution is two-fold:
1. Erase all trace of Zone Alarm. In my case, I had to reboot into DOS mode and then erase the specified files.
2. Recover the security certificate from https://getca.verisign.com.
I found full instructions at CastleCops: "couldn't verify vsinit.dll" error and how to fix.
