I waited a day, hoping for a response, and then tried again. Maybe, I thought, it would be different today. After all, today the sun is shining and my flu is not quite as bad.
I booted the Toshiba with the Unbuntu CD, this time noticing there was a "safe grapphics mode" option. I selected it and waited. The result was better. Instead of half the screen being black, only one-third was. The remaining 2/3 is still scrambled.
Sigh.
