I recall in my Grade 8 Electricity shop class the wizened teacher holding up a red LED diode, and me being impressed that sending electricity the "wrong" way could create light yet didn't heat up like a normal light bulb. Yesterday, I heard that a new Mercedes has a couple hundred LEDs, and that LED lighting could/should replace kerosene lamps for millions in Africa.
My new TX 1220 convertible notebook computer is nearly like that Mercedes. Last week I counted 20 LEDs on it. Almost all are blue, with a pair of blue/orange combos. Here's where they are used:
3 LEDs for power and charging
3 - volume and mute
1 - touchpad
2 - hard drive and DVD drive
4 - custom controls (screen orientation, etc)
3 - ethernet and wireless
1 - memory card
2 - caps and num lock
1 - Webcam
Add the mouse, the external pocket drive, a USB key or two, the 3Dconnexion SpaceTraveller 3D controller, and a ten-LED USB-powered lamp -- and the count is nearly 40 LEDs in an area of less than one square foot.
