Some years ago, Carl Bass gave a single-file format demo that incorporated GIS, mech, and architecture.
In a little noticed announcement regarding Autodesk's completion of acquiring Navisworks, there was this gem:
The software is currently used for 3D coordination, collaboration, and sequencing in design and construction. The two companies plan to jointly develop an even more comprehensive solution to aggregate design information from multiple platforms, including both Autodesk and non-Autodesk solutions.
Should be interesting to follow, although I don't know that an all-in-one format is necessarily useful. I could be wrong, and I think a demo is planned for Autodesk's media event in Paris this October.
