More features of SolidWorks 2008 were shown today, most to thunderous applause. The features were shown to the theme of Star Trek, and partway through, the surprise guest of Leonard Nemoy (Spock) arrived on stage.
Many pixels will be turned into text about SolidWorks 2008, but here is a brief list of some of the new features:
Large assemblies "load" quicker with a preview mode that allows zoom, pan, rotate. You can then select which parts to load; those not loaded still mate visually with loaded parts.
Hole analysis highlights unaligned holes.
You need to select just one edge, and the SolidWorks shows all possible options, such as corners for filleting.
All dimensions are applied automatically, after you select the three reference plans (x, y, z). Dims are placed as plus/minus or GD&T styke.
The BOM is interactive: type custom properties into the BOM list, and the property is fed back to the part. You can move columns and rows in the BOM; if a row, the associated balloon number is updated automatically.
Drag and drop colors and materials onto parts. Interactively change fillet radius, chamfer angle and distance, change hole size and type.
SolidWorks 2008 includes Driveworks Express (for creating build-to-order drawings) and FloExpress (for analyzing water and air flows).
Motion is now integrated: motors, springs, contacts, and physical properties, such as inertia and torque. Easier to create animations. Example shown was of the Mouse Trap game, modeled entirely in SolidWorks. Any sketch can define a motion path; can control pitch, roll, and speed. Screws exhibit correct spiral motion; can connect motions between assemblies.
There's more. I expect SolidWorks 2008 to ship this summer.
