Update
Following Tuesday morning’s keynote by Steve Wozniak, he entertained Q&A from the media. “Wow,” said the man who made the computer personal. “I didn’t realize there were this many media here.”
I was ticked off, because I wanted to ask a question of The Woz, but couldn’t think of any. Others in the room had plenty of questions. Here is a paraphrased account of some of them:
Q: Why did you leave Apple?
A: I’m a quiet man, an engineer, but was no longer critical to Apple. I am still an Apple employee, but at the bottom of the org chart.
Q: Does it take less time and effort to create a revolution a tech revolution today?
A: Once every ten years a device comes along that changes the world, and cannot be predicted. These usually come from young people who lack business experience, like Google.
Q: What about the future?
A: Technology gets to a level and then stops, like automobiles. Computers of the future will be the same [he makes a typing motion with his hands].
Q: What’s the latest project you’ve worked on?
A: I created a controller that makes the keys on my Seqway go faster. I’ve taken my Segway 108mph without a helmet – in the back of my car!
Q:Are you concerned about the education of teens?
A: I am more concerned when a grade 3 student begins to lose interest in school. [He taught grade 5 for eight years recently.]
He is cynical of forced upgrades in the computer market when their only purpose is to fatten the bottom line. “Every computer in the world is now a Macintosh,” he concluded.
