Thanks to TypePad's automated posting technology, I can wish you Merry Christmas without being online today.
My household is split over Christmas.
I come from the German tradition, where some gifts and candy are placed in shoes on the eve of December 5 -- St Nicolas Day is Dec 6. My wife and I have carried this on with our children. They have no objections to that tradition. But German tradition is to open presents on Christmas Eve, and after we married, my wife would not stand for that.
My wife comes from the English tradition, where presents are opened Christmas morning -- which makes no sense to me. Also, instead of sensible shoes, she has this thing about hanging grossly characteritured stockings near the fireplace. Well, not over the fireplace, because that could cause a fire, but near the fireplace.
To compromise, I am having this item posted at 12:01am on Dec 25 -- after the contemplative Christmas Eve, but before the orgy of Christmas Day present opening.
And to my Canadian readers: Happy Boxing Day sales week.
