Autodesk and Microsoft lost a patent case, appealed it, and lost [Mercury News]. Autodesk has to pay z4 Technologies:
* $18 million imposed by the earlier judgment by jury.
* $322,000 for legal fees
* And interest.
z4 brought the action against the world's largest CAD company and the world's largest operating system provider over product activation software used in AutoCAD, Office, and Windows XP. Commentators have noted that the technology -- whether invented by z4 or Microsoft -- must not be very good, because it does such a poor job against illegal copying.
Microsoft owes $142 million, but plans to appeal again.
