Flash memory is considered slow compared to the memory used for RAM. I wondered how slow it is against hard drives. I downloaded a drive speed utility and tested my computer's four hard drives against a 512MB thumb drive (USB 2.0 drive).
In general, the flash drive was:
- as fast the hard disk drives in reading files.
- 3x slower in writing files.
- about the same speed in copying files.
- 2x slower in directory reading.
- 16x slower in erasing files.
The write and erase speeds are so much slower, because of the electrons that have to get adjusted in flash memory.
