Sun is claiming that their Ultra Workstation is the the fastest x86, 64-bit workstation on the market. From Sun's press release:
Performance on SPEC APC SolidWorks 2005 benchmark -- This benchmark was developed to capture the typical activities of a CAD/CAM designer, including I/O, CPU and graphics-intensive operations.
The Sun Ultra 20 Workstation topped the chart in both performance and price/performance categories, outrunning the HP xw9300 workstation by 76%, while costing 2 times less.
Price starts at US$895 but rapidly escalates to $3,695 and beyond for the basic Ultra 45 model with Solaris 10 OS, a single UltraSPARC IIIi CPU, 1GB RAM, an 80GB Serial ATA harddrive and DVD-RW drive, and Sun's XVR Graphics card.
I am scratching my head, wondering what it is in that Ultra 45 that costs nearly four grand. I can get a notebook computer that does most of that for under $1000!
