Press release from Carbonite:
Customers who purchased any digital camera at Staples this holiday season (and for a limited time in early 2006) walked away with peace of mind from knowing that their cherished photos will never be lost. Each digital camera purchase will come with a copy of Staples’ exclusive Digital Photo Protection Kit which includes a free 6-month subscription to Carbonite’s PhotoBackup service, a $17.95 value.
I don't see how "their cherished photos will never be lost" works with "6-month subscription." ... for all of six months. Then you'll be pestered to pay up US$36 a year. I shudder to think of the fine-print attached to the claim that photos will never be lost.
Carbonite is the first “set and forget” online backup service that automatically discovers all the photos on your PC and backs them up securely over the Internet.
Highly improbable. I have 29,910,543KB of photos on my computer. At an optimal upload speed of 40KB/sec, the initial backup would take 8.6 days. Plus, my ISP would surcharge me for exceeding my bandwidth alotment.
Considering how difficult I have found uploading 5o or 100 photos for printing (at Christmas, I waited a day for 24 photos to finish uploading, before giving up), I am unconvinced Internet-backup of photo collections is consumer-friendly.
