IMSI, the makers of TurboCAD, ship out a press release repeating their pledge to change the name of the company. It must be a slow week in the marketing department.
International Microcomputer Software agrees to acquire Virtual Set Top Box Technology and plans name change to Broadcaster. Transaction will transform IMSI into an Internet media company. Broadband delivered video represents a fundamental paradigm change.
The name change and change in direction were previously announced four months ago.
With the emphasis on the sexy world of Internet broadcasting, where does that leave TurboCAD? I think IMSI/Broadcaster would like to spin it off, but I don't know of any CAD company wanting to buy the sourcecode, although the customer mailing list could be useful.
I suspect there is a UGS-like play in the works, where the head of the CAD division gets one or more private investors to buy out the division from IMSI, and set it up as a private company.
Earlier, I called Internet broadcasting "sexy." By that I mean appealing but not substantive. I like listening to Internet radio (compliments of Shoutcast) but I don't have much patience for Internet video. But then, being a sample size of 1, I may not be particularly representative. After all, I also have little patience for tv.
