One of the dirty secrets in CAD is that translation can be difficult and inaccurate, expecially in 3D. Thus, third-parties have sprung up to provide repair tools, or as TransMagic describes its latest release of translation software, "advanced CAD file repair tools which provide more robust solid to solid translation of 3D CAD data."
Some of the fixes that need to be done to translated 3D models include finding and patching missing surfaces and covering holes in solid models. Of course, translation companies are like anti-virus companies: the worse the situtation for users, the better the sitation for them.
'Course, that applies to me too: if CAD were perfect, I'd be out of a job. And there wouldn't be version 1.01.
