I've replaced my 4.5-year-old Toshiba notebook computer with the latest model from Compaq. The reason: the Toshiba no longer accesses the Internet, and I don't know why. Maybe you can figure it out. Here are the symptoms:
- The Toshiba can access the my network of computers and printers in my office.
- But application software cannot access the Internet.
- The wireless software finds WiFi hotspots and connects to them.
- But the computer cannot reach the office router at 192.168.1.1.
- Entering a URL in Internet Explorer causes it to crash.
- Using FTP software causes it to lock up.
- Using Eudora email software to access email crashes it.
- Opera Web browser does not crash, but also cannot access any Web sites.
Here are the things I've tried:
- Tried to access Internet through wireless network card (pugged into PC Card) - no luck.
- Tried with built-in wire connection - no luck.
- Tried to access Internet through dial-up modem - dials and connects with ISP but no Internet xmission.
- Removed and replaced the TCP/IP drivers.
- Removed and replaced all network drivers.
- Reinstalled the operating system (Windows 98).
From these tests and symptoms, my guess is that that some piece of software is missing that links the applications (Web, email, ftp) to the TCP/IP stack.
