Dassault Systemes says its V5R16 software (CATIA, etc) has been ported to run on 64-bit CPUs, specifically the Opteron from AMD. Even more specifically, HP's xw9300 workstations and IBM's Intellistation A Pro 6217 workstations.
I'm always keen to learn the benefits of switching to 64 bits. Dassault lists these relatively detail-free benefits:
- increased maximum product model size.
- high levels of possible product model detail and application performance.
- and [koff, koff] access to AMD's innovative processor technologies.
That last item is meant to be a slap in the face of Intel. The required operating systems were not mentioned.
X64 works retroactively, also on the 6224 machines, although not officially supported. We are running both 6224 and 6217 machines with dual processor configurations.
Performance is quite good, although I would complain that the choice of device drivers for x64 is slim to non-existant for machines of this class. (especially wireless devices) That, coupled with the fact that LUM does not support concurrent offline licensing for x64 are a couple of the HUGE downsides.
