Over on Yahoo's CanonS1IS mailing list, keith asks:
I have a 1G chip that shows memory card error when I put it in and start up the camera. It will not allow me to select the format card option. I can read the card on a PC card reader. I formatted the card on the PC but it still shows an error when installed in the camera.
There are two possible reasons for the problem:
1. The memory card is flawed; return it for a replacement under its warranty. Out of the half-dozen of so memory cards I own, a 64MB Lexar card went bad, and I received a replacement. Memory cards typically have 5-year warranties.
2. The digital camera cannot handle memory cards with such a large capacity. Most digital cameras today can handle 2GB cards, but older ones have smaller limits. My first camera, an Epson PC800, is limited to 96MB; inserting a 128MB, or larger, card causes it to crash. (The technical reason is the FAT -- file allocation table -- system used by the camera limits the amount of memory it can access.)
There is a third possible reason: incompability between the memory card and the digital camera. This problem is fairly rare. In any case, read the camera's documentation to see (1) the maximum size of memory card it can handle; and (2) if it has a list of tested card brand names. In some cases, the camera mfg'er may have an upate that makes the camera more compatible with memory cards.
Finally, don't format the card in your computer; only do that in the camera.
