Autodesk is reporting it has acquired Solid Dynamics of France. Terms were kept secret.
Solid Dynamics has software that analyses kinematics and dynamics in mechanical assemblies. The software was already certified by Autodesk for use with its Inventor 3D MCAD package.
The software also works with CATIA 5 and SolidWorks -- both from arch-competitor Dassault Systemes. The press release does not disclose the future for those customers, nor for customers of the stand-alone version, called SolidDynamicsMI. "This acquisition allows us to incorporate Solid Dynamics' technology and engineering team directly into the Autodesk family..." notes the Autodesk press release.
Update
No future for non-Autodesk versions of the software: "Since this is a technology acquisition Solid Dynamics products will not be maintained or sold in the future. Instead, the technology will be integrated into future releases of Autodesk Inventor Professional. At the same time, we will support those customers that have support requirements according to all existing obligations."
Translation: the stand-alone, CATIA, and SolidWorks versions will be discontinued. Those on support contracts will be supported until they run out.
