It's normal for publications to be funded by advertising; examples include this Weblog and my upFront.eZine e-newsletter.
Xpress Design from Alibre appears to be the first ad-driven CAD software. A screen grab is attached.
Without an Internet connection, no ads are dislayed, but the software runs only for ten minutes before shutting down.
