Of course, 3DS is taking a page from the M$ playbook. 3dxml is open in the sense 'open for business', in the sense 'only business in town'. One word: Licensing.

Also, it fits with 3DS strategy in controlling their own software ecosystem. They'll be offering their own software for accessing that 'open' data in .. Internet Explorer.

Dassault shouts on its website "3D FOR ALL".
What it looks like is more: 3DXML creation only for those who can afford our software. One exception: All can download the free 3D printscreen utility that creates perfect textured 3DXML models that can be viewed by All who download the free Dassault viewer.

But I've been told that even Dassault flagship Catia is not able to open/edit/convert these screenshots.

is there any solution to save simulated assemblies in 3dxml file ?

you can view the 3dxml files with their player. Then use a 3D ripper to convert the data.
