RP for Baghdad is a project of the rapid prototyping industry to support severely injured people in Iraq -- usually head injuries and missing limbs. 3D models are generated from medical image data, and then used by surgeons in craniofacial reconstruction surgery.
The RP industry sees this as a way to provide help in a concrete manner, and also demonstrate that their equipment works in difficult environments. So far, 3D Systems, Materialize, Stratasys, and Z-Corp are providing free software, free models, and working capital.
The Web site was unfortunately not working well when I visited it yesterday. They are looking for additional sponsors to provide contributions (cash and in-kind) for the medical staff in Iraq.
