Is it just here in Australia, or is there a worldwide shortage of the S1?
There is a 2 to 3 week waiting list to get one here. Hopefully mine will arrive next week just in time for Xmas.
It could be popularity, or it could be a manufacturing-distribution problem. Canon guesses at the number to manufacture. If it guesses low, then cameras are allocated, probably to the most profitable regions of the world.
I was reading in Fortune magazine about the port of Los Angeles is becoming a bottleneck, because so many of US imports now come from China. The port is unable to cope with the increase in container ships. Some companies are resorting to flying in their merchandise, which cuts out the profit.
