When will we see grid computing for CAD? Perhaps soon.
(Grid computing is software that distributes computing work among several computers on a network. This speeds up calculation-intensive work, like renderings.)
The Register reports that Adobe is using GridIron Software to provide "the first mass market grid product. This is a version of Adobe After Effects that can be bought through retail channels, and is designed to enable smaller businesses to use grid techniques, where processes are run over a pool of low-cost networked servers."
GridIron Software is a Canadian company (ta da!). Its software gets embedded in the application, such as After Effects, so that end-users don't need special skills to deploy grid computing. It works with as few as two computers. The company claims that the speed increase is linear: "nearly" 2x with two computers, "nearly" 3x with three, and so on. "GridIron XLR8 [get it?] features a unique, patent pending peer-to-peer architecture that allows the computers to discover each other and automatically set up a processing network, distribute work, and recover from failure."
Which CAD vendor will be the first to adopt GridIron's product to "XLR8" their software?
