Q: I am an AutoCAD user, but I have trouble to create a complex linetype. Is it possible to make a flow line that looks like ----->------>--------> something like what I'm showing?
- M. K. K-R.
A: Yes, it is possible. Here is the steps:
1. Open the acad.lin file in Notepad.
2. Scroll down to
3. Take some existing code, and make a copy of its, such as:
*FENCELINE1,Fenceline circle ----0-----0----0-----0----0-----0--
A,.25,-.1,[CIRC1,ltypeshp.shx,x=-.1,s=.1],-.1,1
4. Figure out the code for the > symbol, and stick it in the copied code, as shown below:
*ARROWFLOW,Flowline Direction ---->----->---->----->---->----->--
A,.25,-.1,[">",STANDARD,x=-.1,s=.1],-.1,1
You're going to have to play with the parameters a bit, to make the arrowhead centered in the line. Check out my tutorial on creating complex linetypes at:
is there any software you can buy that already has more line types created?
ralphg replies: Are you looking for a specific pattern of linetype? You might find some by searching Google.
If you have AutoCAD 2004 or Express Tools, it includes a program called "mkltype" that makes custom linetypes from objects in the drawing.

Can I include a color and text font in a complex line type defenition?
Posted by: DUNS | Feb 16, 2004 at 01:41 AM
Text font, yes. Color, no.
A linetypes in AutoCAD has just one color, assigned either directly (thru the Color command) or by the layer.

I'm using Autodesk's Map 3D and I'm noticing plot previews and plot creation times to be "extremely" slow. I work with large (30 - 100 MB) digital orthophotographs. Plot previews or plot creation times that used to take 20 seconds in Map 6 (Autodesk 2002) now takes over 3 minutes. Is anyone else experiencing slow plot creation or preview times?

I am also a CAD user and have also found it hard to create linetypes on my computer, i did find you site very useful but still cannot make shapes within my linetypes can you help?

Take a look at AutoLINE software which makes it easy to create AutoCAD linetypes and also includes its own special linetypes that are more powerful. It comes with over 100 linetypes standard.

How can I get freehand style linetypes rather than the dead straight?
Someone did this for me about 100 years ago and I need an 'artisan' look for a set of drawings.

Hi,
I am busy researching the future for Draughtsman in the engineering community.
There are rumors that soon the engineering software is going to replace the function of Draughtsman.
Please can I have your comments on that.

I am using Civil 3D 2006 and as with the releases since 2000 it uses PaperSpace to set up sheets. I have some basic experience with creating linetypes but need a little help on this one. Here is an example of what I need. I have a linetype defined now for Overhead Electrical lines. The problem is, depending on the way the view is rotated, the text in the line may be upside down. Now if you have any experience with Engineers you know that this is less than desired. What I am looking for is a way to make every other listing of the text in the linetype to be upside down. That way no matter which way my view is rotated there will always be an equal amount of text in the linetype that is easily readable. Can you help me on this.

Hi Dear sir/ Madam,
i need a LineType for 2 draw for Broad Gauge Railway Line (Already a linetype Track1 is there)
but that doesnt fit for some drawing. may i get a line type with
(a) 3 Parellel lines, with
(b) outer Lines thin and Middle one Thikker &
(c) The Middle one has to be a Dashed LineType.
please pm me.
Posted by: Aman | Nov 05, 2006 at 10:27 AM
Aman:
Sorry, but AutoCAD is incapable of drawing parallel lines as a linetype.
As a workaround, you could:
1. Use the Track linetype to draw the center line.
2. And then use the Offset command to draw the two outer lines.

Is there a way to make the text in a linetype readable meaning that its all read from left to right..not upside down?
Posted by: James Castillo | Jul 25, 2008 at 06:29 PM
I need to make a linetype that is basically a 12:1 rectangle repeated over & over but alternates from solid (filled) to hollow. Is that possible? I made a Block that is what I need but I'm hoping there is a better way than copying or arraying the Block. Suggestions?
Posted by: Ken Deppe | Aug 15, 2008 at 09:49 AM
AutoLINE software from Autodsys (www.autodsys.com) adds many new capabilities to linetypes within AutoCAD such as the ability to draw parallel lines, include blocks, use only negative dashes, have a block or text first, or use lisp expressions to prompt for input.

Is it possible to creat SOLID HATCHED Rectangle shape in shape file and then use it to creat a complex line type?
I want to creat following Line type:
-----[]-----[]------[]-----[]-----[]---
Posted by: Giridhari Chandrabansi | Dec 30, 2009 at 01:42 AM
Easily, no.
The only way to do this is to code a solid-hatch rectangle shape in SHP format, and t hen compiling it into an SHX file. This can be done with the Express Tool called MkShape.
(One problem is that the SHP format does not support solid fills, only closely spaced lines.)
Finally, you need to write the LIN code for this linetype, which is not too tough.
