In an upFront.eZine editorial, I wondered when pr and marketing types in the CAD world would jump on the term-du-jour, "cloud' -- to ride the current vogue of cloud computing.
This afternoon, a press release flew into my in box, and it may well be the winner: ParaCloud is a CAD-related product that uses the word "cloud" without having any involvement with cloud computing.
This new software connects Excel spreadsheets with Rhino, MicroStation, Maya, and other software through DXF. The spreadsheet performs parametric modeling. The package includes formulae for behavior modeling, surfaces and ribs unfolding, parametric components population, and performance-driven design.
ParaCloud Modeler (US$675 or less) runs with Excel 2003 or 2007 on Windows XP or Vista. It works specifically with Rhino 3.0 SR5b and 4.0, MicroStation V8 XM, and Maya MEL, as well as generates DXF output.
No demo copy is available, but a number of tutorials and the documentation can be viewed here.
